Onkyo TX-SR706 - Great Product December 22, 2008 I have owned the Onkyo TX-SR706 for just over a month. The unit works exactly as I expected. I am still exploring the numerous listening modes to see what works best under each listening situation. The only negative is the lack of detailed explanations for some of the modes in the manual - almost like someone got tired writing. The automated setup took a little time to get working properly due to the configuration of my listening space. The left surround speaker is in an area that opens into a wide area, and the setup did not recognize that speaker at first. Once I caused a reflective scenario, the setup proceeded correctly. I am currently running a 5.1 configuration until I can find a wireless system for the other two speakers that will provide equivalent power output to the other speakers.

Great Receiver!!! December 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use this receiver with infinity primus speakers. I only use the HDMI input and output's, and I'm not aware of any problems with the other outputs as described in other reviews. Also I had no problem with the mic that came with it to auto set up for my room. I always end up changing the setting to my own specs anyway, so that I didn't care for anyway. I haven't had any problems, except one of my speakers was shorting out because the wire, which had a gold connector, wasn't plugged in the back of the speaker very well and it caused it to short thus making the receiver automatically turn it self off. I called Onkyo about the problem and the first person that I spoke to figured that it was a speaker problem and to check all of the connection. That is how I figured that was the problem, and it was fixed within minutes. The service was great, and the product is great to shut itself down if there is a short so you don't ruin the receiver. I would buy onkyo again, and I think they are very comperable to Denon, but a little cheaper for the same specs.
Great unit December 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this with a Panasonic BD-35 blu-ray player to update my older 5.1 system. I basically wanted to output picture and sound directly from the dvd player to the tv and speakers. While this sounds easy there is a reason why the receiver comes with a 120 page book for setup. I spent some time getting both units to work passing through the sound and picture. Once set up this unit works great. It seems to have enouogh power for our system. The things to watch for when setting up is using "Direct" as the mode for sound as it passes through whatever is coming in. My unit came as "last valid" and it converted it to Neo6 which was not the lossless sound on the dvd. You can use Direct which leaves the display on or "Pure audio" which turns off the display and supposed to give you a pure sound. I would also recommend setting the output resolution to "Through", I did try upscaling to 1080p and it worked good for everything but regular cable channels looked grainy. The audessy setup worked flawlessly for me, I set it up using the minimum 3 locations, you can use as many as 6. For someone that is looking for an out of box solution to your home theater system, this is a good unit. It gives you 4 hdmi inputs many have only 2. It decodes all of the current sound formats and is a 7.1 unit. I have read some of the reviews of people who are using this as a preamp for their high powered systems. All I can say is why are you buying a $500 receiver if you have all this power behind it. Most people buying a receiver want a box that does everything. I am sure there are tradeoffs but for most of us this unit does a great job. I have played some cd's through this system using the sound processing this unit has that literally surrounds you in the music. I am sure for an audio critic this is not the way they listen to music but for a novice like me it sounds fantastic. If you are looking for a good upgrade the combo of the Panasonic bd-35 and Onkyo 706 will do a great job.
Very Happy December 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This unit sounds better than the Onkyo TX-NR801 it replaced. No problems whatsoever in the month or so I've had it. HDMI upconversion is nice. Unit is capable of powering a second set of speaker and bi-ampable. I was hoping DTS-HD Master or Dolby TrueHD would sound better than the regular version but it doesnt. Most reviews on those audio standards will tell you that. Not a fault of the receiver, just thought I'd throw it in there while it was on my mind. I readily recommend this receiver.
