5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound, Awesome Features, Awesome Price   September 2, 2010

This replaced a broken Harmon Kardon AVR, and I was initially concerned that the quality would not be as good, but I was proved wrong. I used the same speaker set up, same room, and the new sound blew it away. Everything is so much clearer and full of voluminous sound. Highly Recommend the system.

5 out of 5 stars great value!   August 18, 2010

My primary purpose for buying this receiver is to listen to mp3 music directly from my computer. The computer speaker systems being offered these days really don't provide the sound output I desire, and since I already owned some extra speakers, all i needed was an amp to bridge the gap. I looked at "stereo" amps, but figured I might as well go ahead and get something that i could possibly build a second home theater around, so I chose to get an "entry level" AVR. With these Klipsch B-2 Synergy Bookshelf Loudspeaker (Pair) and this BIC PL-200 Acoustech Platinum Series Subwoofer i get a very satisfactory listening experience. Granted, it is not audiophile quality, but this is not what most of us are after, and anyone that expects this at this price range is fooling themselves. HOWEVER, for those of us that like good music and appreciate above average quality at moderate to even higher volumes, this receiver will DO THE JOB.

Keep in mind, my set up is simplistic, but from what I have experienced, set up is easy and very intuitive. I ran a 3mm jack out of my computer speaker output into an RCA cable, then connected it the the CD input on the receiver. Then I performed the speaker setup by setting the front speakers on "small", set the crossover at 80Hz, selected yes on the subwoofer, and I was ready for business. An additional setting I like is the Advanced Sound Retriever that really fills out the sound of mp3's to a near CD quality. It really does work!

Again, i can't speak for how it works within a "home theater" set up, but I imagine it would do a fine job. I know it meets my needs - and for less than $200 - I am very satisfied. I highly recommend this product!

4 out of 5 stars An Improvement   August 16, 2010

I ordered this unit from Amazon. Arrived ahead of schedule. Still trying to figure out the different modes and functions. But I can say this, The VSX-520K is a Big Improvement over my old VSX-D514. The sound quality is so much better. More dynamic while watching movies and listening to the radio. The faceplate is going to take some getting used to. Used to the position of buttons on the old one.

5 out of 5 stars Full Featured Receiver   July 14, 2010

I ordered this for a friend as a replacement for a Panasonic SA-HE70 (which got good reviews a few years ago). He isn't disappointed. He now is set for both 3D and blu-ray HiDef. With his Bose speaker system, he doesn't need much power, but this little receiver seems to have alot of it for the money.

This is Pioneer's bottom of the line, but don't let that fool you. It has 3 HDMI 1.4a inputs, decodes Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Audio, and Dolby Pro Logic IIz, is Blue Tooth ready (need adapter), and 3-D video ready. Quite a bargain for $200.

Cons: Spring Clips for surround sound speakers (binding posts for the mains).
If you don't connect with HDMI, DVD audio is monitored thru the "CD" connection. It took a little while to figure this out -causing much anxiety.

If you want a basic surround reciever that is fully capable of supporting all current forms of video and audio, you could do alot worse than the VSX-520-k, and, for the money, you would be hard-pressed to do better.
