A bevy of features and an excellent value, esp. when purchased at Amazon's open box price. I use it as a pre-amp and it performs its functions faultessly.
 Not well built August 1, 2010

Up until this purchase, I was a dedicated Pioneer a/v receiver buyer. I currently have five of various ages from 15 years to 6 years as they get rotated out to secondary locations. They all still work without a problem.
I made an exception for the Onkyo SR707 because of good reviews and it was one of the first receivers that allow a direct connection to every speaker in my main viewing area without any bridging. I have what would be called a 9.2 setup. Anyway, that was nice and the auto speaker setup was fairly close to what I would have done manually.
As others have mentioned, when watching TV the clicking back and forth as the broadcast switches from analog to digital is a little irritating but something I can put up with. But now, after only a little over 10 months of use, the sound will completely disappear, no matter the input, HDMI or analog. The only rememdy is to go through a complete reset (hold DVD button down and hit the standby button). And sit and dread how long even that "fix" will last. It's already lost sound once again, but came back this time after just turning it off and back on. I have a feeling it is not long for the world.
You look at the AVSforum sticky thread on the receiver ([...]) and I don't look forward to dealing with Onkyo service.
Maybe I just got a unusual lemon, but I'm going back to Pioneer.

A terrific receiver for the great sale price Amazon was selling it for at the time of my purchase (less than $500). A great mid-range piece of equipment at a reasonable price. You could pay a ton more for something super top-of-the-line, but I don't see any reason to when this does everything well (after one month, so far, I should qualify). Sounds great!

I bought this receiver in February 2010. It is now in the repair shop for the second time - blinking red light and doesn't work. I have a grounded circuit, the line was checked by electrician, and I have the receiver plugged into a Monster high definition power center when it works. This is my last Onkyo receiver.

I purchased this item from Amazon.com and it has met my expectations. Some reviewers said music was okay, but I found that it produced very good sounds in my family room. DVD's as well as regular TV broadcasts produced great sounding backgrounds and crisp voice reproductions. I gave it a "5" because of this. This unit along with the 7.1 speaker package was a very good upgrade to my home theater setup. I also included the optional Onkyo Ipod dock for Ipod Touch connectivity. We are happy campers, here.
