4 out of 5 stars Great mid-priced AV receiver   August 12, 2010

I purchased this to replace an Onkyo. I researched this receiver in comparison to a Yamaha and a Harmon Kardon and selected it due to good editorial reviews by Stereo Review and others. It has plenty of power and it has video upscaling (the comparable Yamaha did not) so your non-High Def channels look better. It has mulitple zone audio so I can play music on my deck while others listen to TV in the family room. It also runs cooler than my Onkyo. It has network capability but I use my PS3 to manage that. I ended up pairing this reciever with Definitive Technology speakers and subwoofer (highly recommended), a Logitech Harmony 900 remote control with PS3 adapter, and a Denon Ipod docking station. All of this works together very nicely. My components are all hidden behind a cabinet for a nice clean look. Satelite speakers are mounted high up in the corners out of sight (wife is happy) and it sounds great! This receiver has enought power to make the walls rattle if you want, but sounds great at lower volumes as well. On the negative side, Denon does a horrible job of writing its manuals (my research indicated that Denon has a history of poor documentation). Fortunately, you can go to "Batpigs Denon to English Dictionary" (just Google it) and obtain a free and easy to use installation guide (It's basically a "Denon for Dummies" guide). Additionally, the remotes (they give you 2) are equal to the sophistication of the receiver. Fortunately, offerings from Logitech can meet your needs (Denon should simply pay Logitech to design a remote for them). The Logitech Harmony is highly recommended. It makes turning on your TV, receiver, DVD, Wii, PS3, etc. a one step operation.

3 out of 5 stars Great receiver hobbled by HDMI issues   August 4, 2010

Great sound, numerous hookups; includes 7.1 analog EXT connection, which was deleted on the newer 3311ci and which I need for my older SACD player. Had no trouble with networking issues that some have complained about. The 3310 immediately connected to my Windows 7 computer's music library through home network, though the function is very slow and nearly useless with large mp3 collection (150 GB). Unfortunately, the 3310 requires you to scroll through you collection: it took about 2 minutes to scroll from A artists to D artists. Better solution would be an iPod dock. Internet radio works flawlessly, however.

Biggest complaint: HDMI implementation is problematic.

I have a Sony SACD 5-disc changer hooked up to both the optical digital (for CD's) and EXT 7.1 channel analog (for SACD's). The 3310 is also connected to my Sharp Aquos HDTV (52" Quattron LC-52LE810UN) via HDMI connection.

Here is the problem: The 3310 will output stuttering audio from the SACD player UNLESS the television is on. I have turned on/off the HDMI control in the 3310 and the so-called "Aquos Link" in the television and done a re-set on the 3310 with no resolution of the problem. The problem is easily reproducible; if I turn on the TV, the 3310 takes about 5 seconds to recognize the TV and the stuttering is eliminated. Strangely, once the stuttering is eliminated, I can turn the TV off and the stuttering does not re-commence. I confirmed by process of elimination that the problem is not cabling or hookups. The SACD player has no video capability, and it is several years older than HDMI, so it is not a compatibility problem with the player. I infer from this behavior that the 3310 insists on being able to display its GUI regardless of the input selected. When the 3310 senses that the HDMI connection is not hot, it becomes incapable of producing audio. Makes no sense, but there it is. Took me two days of aggravation to figure it out.

Denon phone support was only able to suggest I disconnect the HDMI between 3310 and TV and use a component connection, which is no solution at all. My workaround has been to program my Harmony remote to ensure that the TV is on when CD input is selected. Fortunately, my Sharp HDTV fades to near imperceptible black when no video signal is received.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product, poor interface   July 27, 2010

The receiver has been great - sound quality with my polk 70 series floor speakers has been awesome using standard speaker wire and banana plugs. The instruction manual is not user friendly, and I have some issues where the receiver refuses to read non-HD signal coming in via HDMI cable (i.e., when watching regular cable on an HD tv). To alleviate the issue, I've had to shut down the cable box and restart while on a different source (such as my DVD player) and manually change the cable box channel to an HD channel before switching to the cable input - not a huge deal, but a seemingly unnecessary step. Also, this receiver generates a LOT of heat - I originally stationed it in my entertainment center, but it was generating so much heat that I decided to move it to a more open venue.

Having said that, there are countless inputs (more than a normal person would ever need) and the sound quality is pristine. I'm pleased with the purchase, although not sure if it justifies its price tag (I paid about $850 all-in).

I read a lot of reviews on this receiver before I purchased it. Many of them I found not true after setting up my system. I am glad that I did not allow them to influence my decision. I have owned may different receivers and this has been by far the best. My JBL Studio speakers never sounded so good. Better than with the old Pioneer VSX-81. My receiver has been turned on every day since I purchased it two months ago and going strong. I did the firmware upgrade on it within the first week and it performs as it did when I first turned it on. It is true that the receiver is a bit complicated. With that in mind I would not recommend it to someone that does not have the experience to handle the setup. Thanks Amazon for the great price so I could afford such a great receiver.
