Product Description The insanely powerful Harman Kardon® HK 3490 combines all of an audiophile's must-haves (high-performance phono preamp, preout/main-in jacks, high-current amplification) with an array of multichannel extras (digitial-audio inputs, video switching, dual subwoofer outputs and Dolby® Virtual Speaker technology). Add The Bridge II docking station, and the HK 3490 will connect as elegantly to your newfangled iPod as it does to your time-honored turntable. The HK 3490 isn't a snob about where the music comes from, as long as it sounds great when it reaches its final destination - your ears.

HK Tuner September 5, 2010 Dave Tobias (Coral Gables, Florida, USA) Excellent value from the vendor, and the best bang for your buck when it comes to the tuner itself. Amazing sound quality and very user friendly paneling and set up on the back side. Plus, the convenience of the front side A/V hookup is nice.
Wow - An amazing upgrade. September 2, 2010 Jonny_Chicago Wow, is all I can say. I've actually never written an amazon review, but felt compelled after receiving this today. It replaced an Onkyo (ht r-340) receiver from a home-theater-in-a-box package, and once I plugged everything in my speakers came to life. I'm hearing things I've never heard in my records - the bass fills the room now and the power of the sound, just in changing out the receiver to this one, is unmistakable. Absolutely amazing, the quality and sound are perfect.
Perfect for Simple Music Listening July 2, 2010 Donald Morgan (Portland, OR United States) I got a new, decent turntable recently and wanted to upgrade from the radio shack receiver I had been rocking since I was 17. I was going to buy vintage, but ebay stuff tends to show up with at least one connection needing some work half the time. And most hi-fi places that did resale didn't quite have what I wanted, or if they did, they simply didn't have enough inputs for a turntable, CD player, iPod, etc, etc. On the other hand, most new receivers just seemed primarily orienented towards home theater stuff-I just wanted nice, clear, warm analog sound out of 2 speakers out of a setup me and my ladyfriend wouldn't need an engineering degree to use. It definitely needed a good phono preamp. Also, did I mention I am fairly cheap, so I wasn't gonna pay a ton. Oh, and if it looked better than most of the normal "black glossy box with tons of buttons" receivers, that would be awesome, too.
This receiver gets it right on all counts, LPs immediately sounded better. The FM receiver pulls in a ton of stations. Also, the thing is easy to use and gets plenty loud. All of this for $220? And it looks like it should cost more than that.
The only con I can really think of (besides the hilariously large remote, which isn't really a con so much as funny), is the lack of a loudness button. Not a dealbreaker but I'm a little unclear why they couldn't throw that little eq boost on for when you're doing quiet listening. OH WELL.
If anyone cares, I'm using it with a Technics sl-1200 mk2 and in terms of speakers, dynaco a-25s. In a small/medium living room. The whole combination sounds really lovely, warm and can get quite loud and bass heavy if need be.
Love my new Harman Kardon June 16, 2010 Susannah Danna (Bainbridge Is, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I replaced a 32-year-old Harmon Kardon tuner amplifier with the HK 3390... not b/c it didn't work, rather it only had two plug-ins (I used a switch box) and I needed 4 (DVD, CD, tape deck & TV speakers). It is sleek and modern... looks great on a shelf in my 8' high teak entertainment center. Since I replaced old speakers with Bose 301 Stereo Speakers at the same time, I don't know which component made the most difference - but my updated system sounds terrific. I LOVE IT!
Audiophile quality June 3, 2010 Steve Andersen (Alameda, CA) I'm one of those people who hears things that others miss, and I take sound quality very seriously (I consider MP-3 format unlistenable). The speakers I own were chosen after many hours of comparative listening and cost far more than this receiver, which I consider to be a superb piece of equipment. I've had it for only a month, but I am as totally satisfied with it as I have been with Harmen Kardon's higher powered version which I have owned and used virtually every day for the last 5 years, during which time it has performed flawlessly, both at modest levels for background and at high levels for serious listening. I was pleased to find all the inputs and outputs I needed to handle my sound sources and to interconnect this receiver to the two others I'm already using to fill my home with great sound. Harmon Kardon is a company that caters to and meets the criteria of serious audiophiles who don't have unlimited budgets.
