i don't like it November 7, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
first thing you need to know is that i'm not computer literate and don't understand a lot of technical stuff. for someone who doesn't know what they are doing, i find this thing not very user friendly. there are a lot of options as to how something should sound. i don't understand which program suppose to sound the best with what cd, dvd or whatever. the manual confuses me as it makes references to various pages. i find the "straight" program doesn't sound the best. i don't know. i'm pretty frustrated with this thing. the AM reception in this unit i find dreadful (even though i have a CCrane AM booster). i have an am/fm clock radio that has better reception. also, when watching tv, the commercials come out substantially louder. i know commercials are like that anyway, but this is the first time i've noticed using this system. the volume is substantially different from tv mode to dvd viewing. i have to turn down the volume a lot from switching from tv to dvd viewing. i'm sure all the other reviews are accurate about this unit. but for the typical person who is not an electronic nerd, i find it overwhelming. plus, i've heard marantz' 5.1 system is suppose to be the buy of the year. this is just my opinion. most reviews are pretty positive on this unit. judge for yourself.
Nice receiver but hard to use... September 1, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The receiver produces great sound and has pretty much all the hook ups you could need. I have had some trouble with the onscreen display and programming the sound fields. Overall, this is a good receiver but can be difficult to use for the novice (or even slightly advanced) user.
resolution switching issue August 14, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Good receiver for the money. Nice options with one-touch pre-program on. Could use one more HDMI IN, but not major. I was having a major issue playing cable box source. The receiver hates dealing with resolution changes on the fly sent from TWC box. Going back and forth between 480-720-1080 can create just static and flashing. I thought the item was defective but new replacement did the same thing. SET YOUR CABLE SOURCE TO ONLY 1080. Deselect 480 and 720 outputs. The box must upsample or something. This way the receiver doesn't have to deal with the issue. Never an issue when this is done and all other sources play fine. Made my heart stop the first time since the $2K TV was also new. Glad it was the receiver and Amazon replacement process was good. Remote is decent too. Overall 4 stars.
Back From Hell To Heaven August 9, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was going through a little hell with a pioneer vsx-918v.I noticed one of the other reviews on this Yamaha also mentioned that Pioneer model as well.I could get alot of bass from the pioneer for dolby digital and dts movies but hardly a trace with the cd setting. After spending countless hours on the phone with several tech support people,I was told that the pioneer is not designed for stereo music and that was why I wasn't getting any bass with my cds.I really don't understand this explanation.I am really happy with this receiver after returning the Pioneer to Best Buy.It pretty much does everything I need it to do.It has wonderful bass on my cds which has given me more confidence in the newer receiver models out there. The only thing I wish it had is a switched ac input on the rear of the unit. This Yamaha does not have this. But the Yamaha is heaven compared to the Pioneer.Yamaha RX-V463BL 525 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver
Awesome quality low-end receiver w/great nextgen features July 27, 2008 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
After trying 4 different models (Onkyo TX-SR506/TX-SR576, Pioneer VSX-918V and Yamaha RX-V463), I decided to go with solidly made, the Yamaha RX-V463. This receiver stood out in all aspects except the HDMI 1.3. Amazon description says it's HDMI 1.3 but it's actually 1.2 but supports full 1080p pass without any upscaling and plays both audio and video. Personally, for audio I still prefer Optical over HDMI.
I bought this primarily to listen to music in a 2.1 setup with Infinity tower BETA 40 fronts and Infinity CSW-10 sub. This Yamaha receiver brings fullness to all different kinds of music I have played so far like ABBA, Alien vs. Predator, Frank Sinatra, Bee Gees, Chris Daughtry, Light Rocks/Ballads and my wife listens to a lot of Blues, Jazz and R&B/Souls using different formats (CD, DVD, MP3). I have connected my IPOD using Yamaha YDS-11SL dock and it's great as I can control the IPOD menu using the receiver's remote control unit and the OSD (On Screen Display) capability allows me to display the song titles in the receivers display area.
Another great feature is the compressed music enhancer sound programs as they bring extra richness to the old generation music. I have created my own Scene templates using different play back modes and they work great.
The RX-V463 receiver is fully capable of playing Blu-Ray disc formats (PCM audio and full 1080p video).
The receiver is light weight and doesn't get too hot (consumes only 240 watts of electricity and less than a watt when in standby mode which is lot less than many of the night lamps I use at home) and yet it produces deep lows, crisp highs and clean mids.
I rated this as a 5 star because you can't get anything like this at this price range but I won't call this receiver a future proof for all your media entertainment needs.
Hope this review helps!
Thanks, Jeet El Dorado Hills, CA
