4 out of 5 stars Two years and still going strong!   August 29, 2010
Michael Long (Texas)
I have had my for a little over 2 years now, and it still works great. After reading several reviews, it is clear some people expect too much and others do not know how to use it. It will NOT make copies of your VHS to DVD or vice a versa if they are coded that way. Older movies, on both VHS and DVD can be copied if the anti-pirating code is not on them. It makes great VHS copies from TV from any channel, and excellent DVD copies from TV on unblock channels. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the first one I bought died after about 3 months, but I always buy Wal-Marts extended warranties, and the 2nd one has worked great!

4 out of 5 stars It's all good... almost   August 23, 2010
A. Roberts (Ohio USA)
The transaction went smooth as silk. I wish I could say the same for the unit. We've owned several Magnavox recorders over the years and this one is just cryptic. If you want to record on a DVD you should be in great shape since EVERYTHING is pushing you in that direction. Recording to a tape and playing it back is another story altogether! The manual is not as helpful as it might be. There are a few eccentricities to say the least. Overall, the unit is well worth the money. Just remember that patience is a virtue.

1 out of 5 stars Junk, didn't even last 2 years   July 29, 2010
Tom Bryant (Tipton, Iowa United States)
Bought at WM so wife could record her shows when we were on vacation. 1 year warrenty expired, 7 months later so did the digital tuner. There are no analog channels anymore so this is a piece of junk. Not even worth fixing. I'm going to take it out to the field and put it out of it's misery with the 12 gauge. Magnavox used to be a good name, not so anymore. Where's the quality and pride in products. A word to the wise, check the web before you buy.

3 out of 5 stars Lasted Two Years   July 20, 2010

This DVD/VCR combo, with a built-in digital tuner and crystal-clear picture and sound, is, like much electronic equipment these days, crammed with features, cheaply made, and worked well for two years until it broke. Use a learning universal remote control instead of its dark remote with laughably tiny buttons.

I bought this model for its digital tuner. Since the switchover of digital television in 2009, those of us who had been comfortably recording over-the-air antenna broadcast shows onto VCRs, saving hundreds of dollars a year by not having to pay for cable, were forced to replace the VCR with a limited number of VCRs having a digital (also called an ATSC) tuner. This inconvenience is considerably mitigated by the crystal-clear sound and picture quality of broadcast digital TV. But even now (July, 2010), more than a year after the digital television switchover, most VCRs on the market still don't have a digital tuner. Those that do are VCR/DVD player/recorder combos, which means even if you're only looking for a digitally tuning VCR, you must also pay for a DVD player/recorder. The Magnavox ZV450MW8 seems typical of the current generation of digital tuner VCR/DVD combos: it's reasonably straightforward if time-consuming to set up, loaded a myriad of features, and works perfectly for a while until it breaks. This is the third digitally tuning VCR I've bought since 2008. They just don't last. This model replaced an expensive Sony with interminably complicated channel searching features and a cheap LG that broke almost immediately. (My Toshiba DVD player, by contrast, is still going strong after seven years, and as is my 19-year-old Magnavox TV.)

Set-up: Doable. Detailed instructions and a remote control with tiny buttons permit you, after a while, to view and record over-the-air digital programs. Illogically, the timer recording menu is under "guide," not "menu." The remote control is exasperatingly small and hard to see, unless you watch television in a brightly lit lab, so I programmed a universal learning remote control (like the versatile One For All URC 8820 8-Device Universal Remote Control) instead (the remote code for the Magnavox ZV450MW8A, at least for the URC 8820, is "0675," but several functions, like "input," "display," "VCR," "DVD," "timer set," and "clear" nevertheless have to be programmed in using the remote's learning feature. (Following the instructions, I've also been able to program the remote to operate the DVD player and the TV.)

Operation: High quality, for a while. Crystal-clear and perfect color and sound, even on my vintage 1994 TV, are the two strengths of this VCR, as the built-in digital tuner is able to output excellent picture and audio quality out to the television. The video tape recordings likewise have excellent sound and picture quality, although, forebodingly, the video tape drive operates heavily, rewinding, fast forwarding, and stopping reliably but loudly.

Longevity: Limited. After about 23 months of light operation -- I use the VCR to tape about half an hour most weekdays -- the video playback began hiccuping, with picture and sound jumping, and becoming stilted, slurred, and distorted every several seconds. I ran a video tape cleaner through it (yes, you can actually purchase a videotape cleaner) which fixed the problem for all of two days and then it came back worse.

Magnavox has slapped its label on a digital VCR that doesn't seem to have been built to last. As long as it costs less than a repair bill to just buy a new one, logic unfortunately compels the endlessly purchasing and discarding of landfills' worth of cheap, readily replaceable electronic devices.

5 out of 5 stars Attractive appearance, reliable performance.   May 11, 2010

We (my wife and I) first purchased this equipment at Walmart in March 2008, and connected it to our LCD flat screen in the living-room. With more than 2 years of very satisfactory and reliable performance from this equiment, we decided to purchase another one, to accommodate a recently-purchased LCD, installed in our bed-room. We wanted, of course, this specific brand and model, but Walmart no longer had it in stock, and we could not find any store in our area, at the time, that had it. However, a friend recommended Amazon.com. In fact, we had never ordered from Amazon.com let alone heard about Amazon.com. We placed the order at OUTLET through Amazon.com and the equipment arrived within 6 days. We installed it, and, to our utmost satisfaction, it has been performing excellently. The 90-day warranty, provided by the seller, is evidence of their commitment to excellence, quality and professionalism. FIVE STARS (*****) for this equipment.
