Tech Talk
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).
This is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV or monitor.
Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive. This feature detects image changes at the pixel level versus other types that detect image changes at the scan line level. Separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image to achieve sharper backgrounds and moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
SACD (Super Audio CD). Super Audio CD is a high-quality audio disc standard in which music is recorded in the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) format (where conventional CDs are recorded in the PCM format). Using a sampling frequency 64 times higher than PCM and with 1-bit quantization, the DSD format provides both a wide frequency range and a wide dynamic range across the audible frequency range, providing music reproduction that's extremely faithful to the original source.

Sony's 3:2 Reverse Pulldown

DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Picture comparing film and video frames

Film and video use different numbers of frames
Conversion from 24 frames to 60 frames can cause motion blur, horizontal lines that flicker on and off, or an unnatural shimmer.

Picture showing standard 3-2 pulldown

3-2 pulldown
The traditional method for converting film images to video for television: Take one film frame and split it into three video frames. Then take another film frame and split it into two video frames. The video frames are classified as odd or even.

DVD players and other electronics then take the 60-frames-per-second video, and send it to a TV for viewing.

Picture showing Sony 3-2 reverse pulldown

3-2 reverse conversion
The process of converting 3-2 video back to movie-quality images at 24 frames per second. This allows the DVD player to combine the correct film frames, reproducing the film's original picture quality and texture.

Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive technology

Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with high-bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.

2 out of 5 stars Good as a storage unit, mostly.   June 12, 2010
Bad John (Weymouth, MA USA)
The reason I bought a 400 disk changer is that our house was destroyed in a fire, and the only disks that survived were in the sixty disk player inside the AV cabinet.
So the 400 Disk Sony seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately, after a year I finally filled the unit past slot 200 and found it wouldn't play any of the movies (brand new movies) in any slot above 200. I moved movies from lower slots to the non-playing slots and they wouldn't play. I found that if I took a new movie and put it in the higher slot and then moved it to the lower slots it wouldn't play, BRANDED!
The repair/replacement deal I could do without, I advanced the theory that the unused slots were brand new and should be treated as in warranty, Sony didn't agree. After all, am I supposed to play a movie in all 400 slots when new to ensure they work?

Last Sony product I ever buy.

1 out of 5 stars Lasts 10 Months Then Eats Your DVD Collection (TWICE!)   May 31, 2010

BUYER BEWARE! I HAVE HAD TWO OF THESE OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. BOTH WORKED FINE FOR 10 MONTHS AND THEN WENT INTO AN UNCONTROLLED MODE OF CHANGING FROM ONE DISC TO THE NEXT CONTINUOUSLY. THIS CAN HAPPEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE TO TURN OFF THE UNIT RESULTING IN YOUR ENTIRE DVD COLLECTION BEING DESTROYED. THIS IS NOT COVERED BY YOUR HOMEOWNERS POLICY NOR SONY AS I CHECKED INTO THIS. THANKFULLY A MEMBER OF MY FAMILY WAS THERE BOTH TIMES TO UNPLUG THE UNIT BEFORE THE DVD'S WERE SCRATCHED BEYOND REPAIR.

DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great unit to have   May 24, 2010
L. Tangelo (Gaithersburg, MD)
I have had this unit for a while now, and it works great. I have loaded 15 MP3 CD's in it, so I have over 300h of music. Some say it's a bit slow to load (20-30sec), but if you're home chillin, what's the rush? 30 sec of silence is golden :).
Navigating is ok, but I have an issue with the fact that while playing MP3 cd's to play a particular song you have to start playing the folder, then and only then you can view the titles in that folder. Plus, unit doensn't play MP3 DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars Low dollar media server   May 20, 2010
B. Lampton (San Antonio,TX)
This particular changer is going on 2 1/2 years without a hitch. I have a pair of 995's and have not had a single problem with either one. Despite it's large foot print it is a much more economical solution compared to a media server with similar storage capacity.

1 out of 5 stars 2 yrs and DVDs wont play   March 5, 2010

As in other reviews I found entering disc information less than easy. Then one day all entered info was gone. Re entered disc info again. Now after just 2 years, Mfg date Jan 2008, it won't read dvds. It still plays cds. I found some online forums and others are having the same issue. Something about the laser only lasting so many hrs and also a diode that goes out. Sony is no help big phone bank of "tech" people that read from a list of suggestions and then when they finally are convinced your unit can't be reset they offer you an exchange for $275 you pay shipping one way,and a 90 day warranty. refurbished, not new. The phone calls took hrs. I paid $300 new in Feb 08 for this, the price is up over $400 so I think I will go back to a single unit good quality (not Sony) unit. Think of all the calories I'll burn changing the discs. Next plan will be a server, all digital computer based.
